Shorthanded Women's Basketball falls to Philander Smith
The Wiley University women's basketball team was missing key players in a 66-54 loss against Philander Smith University Saturday in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Lady Wildcats (10-6, 5-3 GCAC) fall to 6-2 at home. They were without three players, including leading scorer Jamiya Eaddy and Preseason All-GCAC First Team selection Diamond Hawthorne, who missed the last three. Elizabeth Camacho, who made six starts was also absent.
Wiley turned it over four times in the first four minutes. Philander Smith took advantage and built an 11-3 lead. Ashunti Cooper hit a 3-pointer, Minnie Miller made a layup and Jay'lann Myles hit a jumper cutting the margin to three. The Lady Wildcats didn't make a basket in the last 4:48. The Lady Panthers extended their lead to 25-11 after one.
They led by as many as 24 midway through the third quarter. With the game in hand, Philander Smith emptied its bench. Wiley closed the game on a 13-2 run. It was outshot 40.7 to 25.4 percent.
Miller led the Lady Wildcats with 15 points. She shared the team lead in rebounds with Myles at six. Tamia Dolls followed with 11. Cooper tallied 10 points. Kiersten Harris recorded six assists and two steals.
The Lady Wildcats will return to the court on Friday against Dillard University. They won 61-56 on the road on December 1. The Lady Bleu Devils defeated Oakwood University 69-61.
