Women's Basketball begins second half of GCAC play
The Wiley University women's basketball team will start the second half of Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play with rematches against Dillard University and Southern University at New Orleans on Friday and Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.
Both games are scheduled for 5 p.m. tips and will broadcast on the Wiley University channel on HBCU Plus, which can be viewed online or the application can be downloaded on a phone, tablet or Smart TV.
The Lady Wildcats (10-6, 5-3 GCAC) are coming off a 66-54 loss to Philander Smith on Saturday. They were without three players and outshot 40.7 to 25.4. Minnie Miller led the team with 15 points and six rebounds. Tamia Dolls followed with 11 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Wiley won the first meeting against Dillard 61-56 on December 1 in New Orleans. It edged Southern-New Orleans 85-75 in overtime on December 2. The Lady Wildcats are tied for fourth with Dillard. A victory on Friday would give Wiley the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Dillard (6-9, 5-3 GCAC) narrowly lost to Fisk University 76-72 on Friday and beat Oakwood University 69-61 on Saturday. Cassidy Lowe led the Lady Bleu Devils with 21 points and seven rebounds on Friday. She recorded a double-double against Oakwood with 21 points and 13 rebounds. In the first meeting against Wiley, she had 17 points and 20 rebounds.
Southern-New Orleans (1-14, 1-7 GCAC) is on a five-game losing streak after falling to Oakwood and Fisk. Four of the five losses were by more than 25 points. Jordan Harris led the Lady Knights against Oakwood with 22 points on Friday. Aalexuz Bourne grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds. Harris recorded 19 points and six steals against Fisk on Saturday. Bourne had 10 blocks and seven rebounds.
In the first meeting against Wiley, Harris put up 34 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Jashyree Bell recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sa'naa Holmes and McKenna Harris scored in double-figures with 10 each.
Friday will mark Dillard's first visit to Alumni Gymnasium since December 14, 2021. The Lady Wildcats lead the series 10-6 with the earliest meeting occurring in 2004. Wiley has won all six meetings against the Lady Knights dating back to 2013.
