Women's Basketball opens road swing at Virgin Islands
For the first time in program history, the Wiley University women's basketball team will play outside of the continental United States when it takes on the University of Virgin Islands at 4 p.m. central standard time Thursday at the Sports and Fitness Center in Charlotte Amalie West, St. Thomas.
The game will be broadcast on HBCU+ on the Virgin Islands and Wiley University channels. It can be viewed online or the application can be downloaded to a phone, tablet or Smart TV. Live statistics will also be available.
The Lady Wildcats (11-9, 6-6 GCAC) are coming off a 2-5 homestand and have lost the last four games they've played. One of the victories was a forfeit by Southern University at New Orleans because it didn't have enough players for the January 20 game. Wiley is ranked fifth in the GCAC, trailing Dillard University by 2.5 games.
Ashunti Cooper recorded her sixth double-digit scoring game with 18 against Fisk on Thursday. Cailan Hale posted a career-high 18 points against Oakwood on Saturday. Alayia Francis tallied a career-high 14 points and six assists.
Virgin Islands (0-13, 0-9 GCAC) is searching for its first victory. It fell 63-50 to Dillard on Thursday and 62-53 against SUNO on Saturday. Only three of its games have been within single digits. Ashukmayah Phillips leads the team with 12.9 points per game. Kashay Bass is the leading rebounder with seven per game.
After Thursday's game, the teams will rematch at Alumni Gymnasium on February 12.
