Women's Basketball lets lead slip in fourth quarter

TOUGALOO, Miss. - The Wiley University women's basketball team was unable to hold off Tougaloo College as its double-digit lead slipped away in the fourth quarter of a 57-54 loss Saturday at Kroger Gymnasium.

The Lady Wildcats (11-12, 6-9 GCAC) dropped their fifth consecutive game but remain in fifth in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference standings. They played with only seven players for the second straight contest. Five players, including three starters, were out.

Wiley trailed 17-15 after the first quarter. Jay'lann Myles hit a 3-pointer and Jinaye Pittman scored in the paint to put Wiley ahead. Brianna Garrett hit a 3-pointer to extend the lead to six. The Lady Wildcats went on a 15-0 run, holding the Lady Bulldogs scoreless for nearly the entire quarter.

In the third quarter, Wiley missed its first five shots and turned the ball over. Tougaloo hit three shots to trim the margin to four. Asia Foster hit three shots, including a 3-pointer - giving Wiley a double-digit advantage. A jumper by Kiersten Harris gave the Lady Wildcats their largest lead of the game at 45-31.

Wiley only made two shots in the fourth quarter and turned the ball over nine teams. It was held scoreless for the last six minutes of the game. The Lady Bulldogs took the lead with 2:22 left in the game. The Lady Wildcats had multiple opportunities to tie the game but came up empty.

Cailan Hale led the team with 11 points. She added nine rebounds, an assist and a steal. Myles put up eight points, seven rebounds and three steals. Francis tallied eight points, four rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot. Pittman provided seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds in her most productive game of the season. Garrett posted seven points and two rebounds. Harris recorded six points, eight rebounds and a team-high three assists.
