Women's Basketball edges Centenary College

In a game where both teams shot 30 percent, Wiley University women's basketball made key shots in the fourth quarter to triumph 67-59 over Centenary College of Louisiana Tuesday at Alumni Gymnasium.
 
The Lady Wildcats (5-2, 1-0 HBCUAC) win consecutive games for the second time this season. They improved to 3-2 at Alumni Gymnasium and won their third consecutive game against the Ladies.
Wiley led by as many as 11 in the first half and held a 27-24 lead at halftime. The lead held up until 7:48 left in the third. The Lady Wildcats missed three straight shots, which allowed Centenary to claim a one-point lead. Cailan Hale gave the lead back to Wiley with a layup. It only made one basket in the next six minutes, which led to an 11-3 run for the Ladies and put the Lady Wildcats behind 43-36.
 
Mia Thomas hit a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter to cut the margin to three. Alexis Foster tied the game with a 3-pointer with 8:44 remaining. She gave Wiley the lead with a steal and layup. Brandy Jones hit a 3-pointer with 5:49 left to increase the lead to six. Wiley led by as many as eight. Two 3-pointers by Centenary cut the margin to two with 46 seconds left. The Lady Wildcats closed the game by hitting six of eight free throws.
 
They outshot the Ladies 31.9 to 30.9 percent, but dominated them on the boards 59-45. The turnover battle went to Centenary 23-18.  Wiley was outscored 36-29 in second-chance points and points off turnovers.
 
Hale led all scorers with 15 points, adding seven rebounds and two assists. Thomas followed with 12 points. She contributed four rebounds and two assists. Jones provided 11 points and five rebounds. Kelechi Dike recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Keimora Banks had a solid defensive performance with 11 boards (nine on defense) and five steals.
The Lady Wildcats resume Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) play against Southern University at New Orleans on December 4 at Alumni Gymnasium.
