Women's Basketball outlasts Dillard
NEW ORLEANS - Wiley University women's basketball bounced back after allowing a fourth quarter lead slip away to defeat Dillard University 88-81 in overtime Saturday in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference game at Dent Hall.
The Lady Wildcats (12-4, 7-2 HBCUAC) win their third straight over the Lady Bleu Devils and snapped their five-game winning streak. They complete a regular season sweep for the first time since joining the conference in 2022. The victory keeps them within a game of Paul Quinn College for the HBCUAC West Division lead.
Wiley trailed 41-39 at halftime. Its defense helped them grab the lead in the third quarter. A steal by Erin Love set up a jumper for Alexis Foster. She stole the ball to set up a 3-pointer for Brandy Jones, which gave the Lady Wildcats a 47-41 lead. They led by as many as eight but Dillard scored the last five points of the quarter to cut the margin to one.
The Lady Wildcats trailed by four early in the fourth quarter. A layup by Jones and a jumper by Keimora Banks gave them the lead. Jones got a steal and layup. Foster stole the ball and hit a jumper to extend the lead to five. With 2:17 left in the quarter, Foster hit a 3-pointer to increase the margin to nine. Wiley didn't make another field goal and only hit four of eight free throws.
Dillard (10-11, 6-5 HBCUAC) took advantage of the offensive struggles and pulled within striking distance. Kiara Howard hit the game-tying 3-pointer in the closing seconds to send the game in overtime.
Wiley struck first in overtime and took a four-point lead. It didn't allow Dillard to make a field goal until 2:39. The Lady Bleu Devils scored five points from the free throw line. Kendall Campbell hit a 3-pointer to increase Wiley's lead to six, which was followed by Dillard's lone field goal of the period, which cut the margin to three. Kelechi Dike stole the ball and hit a layup. Jessica Nerestant hit a layup to reach the final tally.
Jones led all scorers with 24 points. She hit eight shots, including four 3-pointers. Jones also contributed eight rebounds and three assists. Jessica Nerestant recorded her fourth double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Banks tallied 14 points, three rebounds and three assists.
The Lady Wildcats will play at Texas A&M University-Texarkana on Tuesday and visits Arkansas Baptist College on Saturday.
