Women's Basketball stumbles against Texas A&M-Texarkana
TEXARKANA, TEXAS - Wiley University women's basketball could not overcome its offensive struggles in the first half as its fourth-quarter rally fell short in a 78-69 loss against Texas A&M University-Texarkana Tuesday at the Patterson Student Center.
The Lady Wildcats (12-5, 7-2 HBCUAC) fall to 6-3 on the road and 3-1 in road non-conference games. They fall to 2-3 against the Lady Eagles.
Wiley opened strong. Buckets by Keimora Banks and Jessica Nerestant gave it a five-point lead. Momentum quickly shifted. The Lady Wildcats turned the ball over eight times and hit two of their next eight shots. Texas A&M-Texarkana took advantage of the struggles and took a 16-12 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Wiley had six turnovers and only hit three of 17 shots. It went into halftime trailing 36-22.
The shooting woes continued in the third quarter as it hit 3 of 16 shots while Texarkana shot 9-for-15. The Lady Wildcats trailed by as many as 24 points. They made a run in the fourth quarter. Three-pointers by Kendall Campbell and Mia Thomas dropped the margin to 14 points. A technical foul on Texarkana's Chioma Treasure Emeh sparked a 13-point run. Thomas hit two shots, Nyemah Hodo made a layup and Brandy Jones hit a 3-pointer to pull Wiley within four with 3:40 remaining.
The Lady Eagles pushed the margin to nine points as Wiley didn't convert on its next two shot attempts. Wiley was outshot 42.2 to 35.3 percent and was edged on the glass 45-44. Its 23 turnovers lead to 27 points for Texas A&M-Texarkana.
Thomas led the Lady Wildcats with 15 points, shooting 5-for-9 from the field. Jones followed with 14, hitting four 3-pointers. She contributed four rebounds and two assists. Alexis Foster put up nine points, five rebounds and shared the team lead in assists with Banks, as she made her return to her former home. Nerestant and Banks led the team with six rebounds.
The Lady Wildcats conclude their road trip on Saturday at Arkanas Baptist College. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
