Wiley University launches National Search for Next Head Women's Basketball Coach
MARSHALL, TEXAS – Wiley University has announced an immediate national search for an experienced and ambitious leader to serve as its next Head Women's Basketball Coach. The university is seeking a candidate with championship expectations to guide the historic program forward.
The ideal candidate will build and maintain a highly competitive program that prioritizes academic success, character development, athletic excellence, compliance, sportsmanship, and the holistic well-being of student-athletes. Qualified applicants must possess a Bachelor's degree, previous collegiate coaching experience, and a proven track record in player development, basketball strategy, and recruiting student-athletes who excel both on the court and in the classroom. Commitment to the University's mission, values, and student-centered culture is essential.
The vacancy follows the departure of DeWitt Mandley, who accepted the head coaching position at William Penn University. Over three seasons, Mandley led the Lady Wildcats to 43 wins, including five postseason victories. Under his tenure, Wiley reached the HBCUAC championship game in 2025 and captured the HBCUAC West Division title this past season.
In addition to their on-court success, the Lady Wildcats achieved exceptional academic marks under Mandley, maintaining one of the highest GPAs in the athletic department. Named an NAIA Scholar Team for three consecutive seasons, the program achieved a remarkable 3.53 team GPA for the 2025-26 academic year, with all 16 roster members maintaining a 3.0 or higher GPA.
"Women's basketball is one of the storied programs of our institution," said Tashia Bradley, Ph.D., Wiley University Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. "We would like to thank Coach Mandley for his contributions to the program and University. We are looking for someone who will consistently produce teams that will contend for HBCU Athletic Conference and NAIA titles and, most importantly, graduate Wiley University students."
Founded by Wiley University Athletics Hall of Famer Willie Mae Owens following the passage of Title IX legislation in 1972, the women's basketball program remains one of the most cherished pillars of the department. The Lady Wildcats boast five NAIA Tournament appearances—including a historic Fab Four run in 2014—eight conference or division titles, and the 2013 Red River Athletic Conference Tournament championship.
How to Apply: Interested applicants can submit their applications online through the Wiley University Human Resources website under the Career Opportunities portal.
