Women's Soccer falls to Centenary after late foul call
SHREVEPORT, La. - The Wiley University women's soccer team put up eight shots with four on goal, but a late foul call allowed Centenary College of Louisiana to take the lead in a 1-0 loss Sunday at Atkins Field.
The first half was evenly matched. Centenary held a slight edge in shots with five to three for Wiley. Nadia Hernandez and Deyanara Hernandez each put a shot on goal in the first 15 minutes of the match. Destiny Allison stopped three shots. The teams went into halftime locked in a scoreless draw.
The Lady Wildcats (1-6-0, 1-0-0 CAC) had scoring opportunities in the second half. Yajaira Hernandez took two shots but one was blocked and the other was stopped by Centenary's goalkeeper Zoe Keller. A foul in the 80th minute set up a corner kick for the Ladies which they put past Allison, who finished the game with seven saves. Yajaira Hernandez took two shots in the 87th minute, but one went high, and the other was saved by Zeller. Wiley was outshot 14-8 and 8-4 in shots on goal.
Seventeen fouls were called, with 10 against the Ladies. The officials issued five cards against Wiley, including a red card. The Lady Wildcats and Ladies will rematch on Wednesday at Pemberton Field.
