Women's Soccer claims HBCUAC Opener with Strong Second Half

Alexse Orozco and Deyanara Hernandez scored in the second half to lift Wiley University women's soccer to a 3-1 victory over Paul Quinn College in its Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) opener Saturday at Pemberton Field.

The Lady Wildcats (6-3-0, 1-0-0 HBCUAC) extend their winning streak to two matches and win their conference opener for the first time since 2017. They improved to 2-0 at home.

The teams were knotted at one at halftime. Paul Quinn struck first in the 27th minute with a pass down the middle of the field, which Simara Barton put past Mariana Quijano. The Lady Wildcats answered immediately. A foul set up a free kick for Feryi Sanchez, who blasted the ball over Paul Quinn goalkeeper Fernanda Rosas' outstretched hands to tie the match.

In the 55th minute, passes by Yamilett Umana and Hernadez set up Orozco, who put in her second goal of the season and first game-winning goal. Hernandez was fouled attempting to shoot and awarded a penalty shot. She shot it over an outstretched Rosas for her fourth goal of the season. The Lady Wildcats outshot the Lady Tigers 17-9 and 6-2 in shots on goal.

The match was chippy as officials called 26 fouls and issued three yellow cards to each team. The Lady Wildcats continue their homestand on October 11 against Oakwood University.
