Volleyball drops matches against Talladega, Clark Atlanta

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Wiley College volleyball team were unable to pull out a victory with a three-set loss against Talladega College (25-10, 25-16, 25-19) and a three-set defeat against Clark Atlanta (25-22, 25-22, 25-23) Thursday at the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center.

The Lady Wildcats (1-8, 1-2 GCAC) fall to 0-5 away from Alumni Gymnasium as they drop their third straight match. Talladega extended its winning streak to three after sweeping Clark Atlanta, improving to 4-1 in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play.

Against Talladega, Wiley College was outhit .337 to -.026 and 42-17 in kills. It allowed double digit kills in all three sets and only benefited from 12 attack errors.  The Lady Wildcats briefly led in the second set, taking advantage of three errors.

Zykeya Hunt led the Lady Wildcats with a career-high eight kills. Brayleigh Mitchell followed with four. Kyra Woods had eight assists and Nadia Cortez followed with six. T'aja Hardy and Cortez led the team with eight digs. Shyla Starks put down two aces. Hunt and Mitchell each got a block assist.

In the second match, Wiley College was outhit .232 to .082 and 40-24 in kills. It allowed 12 aces but was aided by 14 errors by the Lady Panthers. The Lady Wildcats had six aces and only made four errors. Both teams had four blocks.

Kya Gray led the team with six kills. Shayla Arthur and Hunt followed with four. Cortez recorded her second career double-double with 12 digs and 10 assists. She also recorded a career-high four aces. Ashlee Traylor had a solo block and two block assists.

Wiley College led by as many as three in the first set on kills by Gray, Cortez, Hunt and Rejinah Hickman. Two attack errors and a receiving error gave the lead to the Lady Panthers. A kill by Arthur sparked a four-point run to give the Lady Wildcats a three-point lead. Three attack errors and a receiving error helped Clark Atlanta tie the set. Four kills sealed the set for the Lady Panthers.

The Lady Wildcats led by as many as four in the second set. They were unable to stop Clark Atlanta's attack – giving up 12 kills. Wiley College only scored six kills and made nine errors. A five-point run gave the Lady Panthers the lead for good.

In the third set, the Lady Wildcats were once again unable to overcome the strong attack by the Lady Panthers – allowing 15 kills. Wiley College trailed by as many as seven. Five errors brought Wiley College within two. A block by Johna Davis and Hunt pulled it within one. Three errors tied the set at 13.  Cortez recorded three aces and a kill to put the Lady Wildcats ahead by five. They only recorded two kills and gave up seven.

Wiley College will continue its road trip on Friday at Fisk University.
