Volleyball ends road trip with five-set victory over Oakwood
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Wiley College volleyball team went the distance in its final match of its four-match road trip and came out on top - for its second win of the season against Oakwood University (25-19, 18-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-13) Saturday at Ashby Auditorium.
Shayla Arthur led the team with 15 kills. Johna Davis followed with 14. Kyra Woods and LeAndria Jackson recorded double-doubles. Woods put up 26 assists, 11 digs and three service aces while Jackson added 22 assists and 14 digs. T'aja Hardy posted a career-high 22 digs and three service aces. Ashlee Traylor and Davis contributed a solo block and a block assist.
The Lady Wildcats (2-9, 2-3 GCAC) were outhit .122 to .105 but outscored Oakwood in kills 61-45. The teams were even in the serve with Wiley College putting down nine aces and making six errors and the Ambassadors putting down eight aces with five errors. Wiley College topped Oakwood in digs 82-70 but was out-blocked 10-6.
Two kills by Traylor and one by Arthur sparked a six-point run which extended Wiley College's lead to seven in the first set. Three kills by Davis and two by Traylor helped clinch the set for the Lady Wildcats who put down 15 kills.
While Wiley College put down 11 kills in the second set, it committed 12 attack errors. It gave up eight kills and only forced four errors. Two attack errors and a receiving error helped Oakwood tie the match. The Lady Wildcats retook the lead in the third set. They trailed by four but two kills from Arthur helped tie the set at 16. A kill by Zykeya Hunt gave Wiley College the lead for good. Nadia Cortez got an ace and two kills by Arthur clinched the set.
Wiley College was unable to finish the match despite jumping out to the lead. Oakwood went on an 11-1 run to capture a seven-point lead. The Lady Wildcats were only able to pull within four. Errors helped the Ambassadors force a fifth set.
In the deciding set, the Lady Wildcats pulled out to a 10-3 lead. Davis got two kills. Hunt and Arthur also put down kills. Four kills by Trinity Williams helped the Ambassadors rally and tie the set at 13. Kya Gray sealed the match with two kills.
On Friday, the Lady Wildcats fell to Fisk University in three sets at Henderson A. Johnson Gymnasium in Nashville. They were outhit .202 to .117 and 37-27 in kills. Arthur and Davis led the Lady Wildcats with six kills. Woods provided 10 assists and Jackson nine. Cortez and Jackson put down aces. Cortez led the team with nine digs. Traylor, Rejinah Hickman, Hunt and Gray had block assists. Davis recorded a solo block.
Wiley College will return home and host Talladega College at 4 p.m. Friday and Dillard University at 1 p.m. Saturday.
