Volleyball hosts top two GCAC teams
The best of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference will visit Alumni Gymnasium as the Wiley College volleyball team hosts Talladega College at 4 p.m. Friday and Dillard University at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The matches will be broadcast on HBCU+ Channel 115. Live statistics will also be available and the links can be found in the volleyball schedule on wileyathletics.com.
The Lady Wildcats (2-9, 2-3 GCAC) return to Alumni Gymnasium after a four-match road trip which ended with them picking up their second victory of the season in five sets against Oakwood University. Shayla Arthur put up 26 kills, including 15 against Oakwood University on September 16. Kyra Woods led the team with 51 assists. She recorded her first double-double of the season with 26 assists and 11 digs against Oakwood. Nadia Cortez notched a double-double against Clark Atlanta on September 14 with 12 digs and 10 assists. LeAndria Jackson double dipped in double digits with 22 assists and 14 digs.
In its first meeting against Talladega on September 14, it was outscored 42-17 in kills. The Tornadoes hit .337 in the match. Zyaire Prettie Garrit led the team with 17 kills on 23 attempts. Talladega used two setters with Giovanna Costarelli putting up 18 assists and Nuria Santos tallying 10. Briyith Echeverri posted 13 digs. Nedu Evans had six block assists.
After defeating Wiley College, Talladega picked up victories against Philander Smith University, Fisk University and Oakwood University to stay right behind Dillard University, which is unbeaten in five conference matches.
The Lady Bleu Devils (10-5, 5-0 GCAC) have only lost two sets in their five conference matches. Both were against Talladega College on September 1. Dillard won the match in five sets, defeating their former coach LaShaunda Spurgeon. It is in its first season under the leadership of Dr. Ashley Johnson.
Sara Da Silva leads Dillard with 88 kills. Vanae Sapp follows with 80. Taylor Hurst leads the team with 198 assists. Ajanae Chatham follows with 108. Chasry Lum-King has 222 digs and is averaging 4.27 per set. She has one of the GCAC Defender of the Week awards. Gabrielle Washington is leading the team with 52 blocks.
The Lady Wildcats fell in all three matches against Dillard last season – including the GCAC semifinals. They won the four previous matches before joining the GCAC in 2022.
