Volleyball hosts Centenary College
The Wiley College volleyball team returns to Alumni Gymnasium for a non-conference match against Centenary College of Louisiana at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The match will be broadcast on HBCU+ Channel 115 and live statistics will also be available. The links will be available in the volleyball schedule on wileyathletics.com. The HBCU+ app can be downloaded on your phone, tablet or Smart TV.
The Lady Wildcats (2-12, 2-6 GCAC) are coming off a five-set loss at Philander Smith University (25-20, 15-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-13). They were slightly outhit .179 to .178 but outscored the Lady Panthers 58-54 in kills. Wiley College was also stronger on the serve with seven aces and only four errors. It allowed six aces but benefited from 10 errors by Philander Smith. The Lady Panthers were stronger on the block with 11 to Wiley College's six.
Three Lady Wildcats recorded double-doubles. Rejinah Hickman posted a career-high 16 kills and 16 digs. Nadia Cortez recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 assists and a career-high 22 digs. LeAndria Jackson tallied her second double-double with 21 assists and 13 digs. Shyla Starks notched her second double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs.
Brayleigh Mitchell and Shayla Arthur also reached double digit kills with 10 apiece. Arthur recorded a team-high five blocks (1-4). Kya Gray, Cortez and Hickman each put down two aces.
The Ladies (5-10, 0-5 SCAC) enter Wednesday's match on a three-match losing streak. All three of the matches were in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Elizabeth Canady and Jalin St. Martin are the top hitters with 120 and 119 kills respectively. Meadow Smith is averaging 7.23 assists per set. Kiara Liedy is averaging 4.08 digs per set. Canady and Bailee Henderson lead the block with 28 and 25 apiece.
In the September 6 match – which was won by the Ladies in three sets – St. Martin put down 11 kills, Smith tallied 31 assists and five service aces. The Lady Wildcats were outhit 35-20 in kills. They gave up nine service aces while only scoring four.
Wiley College and Centenary will meet for the 24th time. Only seven of the previous matches have gone in the Lady Wildcats favor. Their most recent win in the series was in 2018.
