Volleyball begins second half of GCAC play at Tougaloo, Rust
The Wiley College volleyball team will begin the second half of Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play with matches at Tougaloo College on Friday and Rust College on Saturday.
Friday's match will start at 6 p.m. and Saturday's first serve will be at 1 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on the respective school's YouTube channels. The links will be listed in the volleyball schedule on wileyathletics.com.
The Lady Wildcats (2-13, 2-6 GCAC) fell to Centenary College of Louisiana in straight sets on Wednesday at Alumni Gymnasium for its fourth consecutive loss. They were outhit .246 to .082 and outscored 43-37 in kills. The teams were fairly even on the serve with Wiley College putting down two aces and making one error. It allowed three aces but benefited from two service errors by Centenary.
Brayleigh Mitchell led the Lady Wildcats with 11 kills. It was the third time she has recorded double-digit kills. Shyla Starks followed with 10 marking her third match with double-digit kills. LeAndria Jackson put up a season-high 34 assists. Nadia Cortez tallied a career-high 29 digs – recording 20 or more in back-to-back matches. Starks and Cortez both recorded aces.
In their first meetings this season, the Lady Wildcats swept Tougaloo College on September 8 at Alumni Gymnasium. They out hit the Lady Bulldogs .086 to .080 but were edged 27-25 in kills. Wiley College put down 11 aces and benefited from 10 service errors. It fell to Rust College in four sets on September 9.
Tougaloo (1-16, 0-6 GCAC) is on an eight-match losing streak after picking up its only win against LeMoyne-Owen. Tatyeanna Armstrong led the Lady Bulldogs with eight kills and 19 assists in the Sept. 8 match against Wiley College. Taikeidra Joseph had six kills and two block assists. Ke'Ira Collier recorded 15 digs.
Rust (4-16, 2-5 GCAC) has split its last two conference matches with a five-set victory at Tougaloo on September 28 and a five-set loss against Oakwood University on Wednesday. The Lady Bearcats put down 42 kills against the Lady Wildcats on September 9 – led by Deja Campbell's 17. Jamika Coleman had six kills and five blocks (2-3).
The Lady Wildcats will make their first trips to Tougaloo and Holly Springs, Mississippi. Last season, they hosted Tougaloo and played them at Oakwood University. All three matchups against Rust College were on neutral courts – including last season's GCAC Quarterfinal.
