Volleyball splits GCAC matches against Tougaloo, Rust

The Wiley College volleyball team overcame losing the first set to defeat Tougaloo College in four sets (19-25, 25-17, 25-12, 25-14) on Friday but were unable to build on early momentum in a four-set loss (14-25, 25-20, 25-13, 27-25) at Rust College on Saturday.

The Lady Wildcats (3-14, 3-7 GCAC) outhit Tougaloo .211 to .063 and outscored them 45-31 in kills. Brayleigh Mitchell led the team with 13 kills. She was one of three to finish in double digits. Shayla Arthur and Shyla Starks finished with 12 each. For the second straight match, LeAndria Jackson was the primary setter and tallied a season-high 39 assists. Fatima Ortega put up five of Wiley College's 12 aces. Kya Gray followed with three.

Defensively, Cortez led the team with 20 digs – marking her third straight match with 20 or more. Arthur recorded a solo block.

Wiley College gave up 13 kills in the first set and only recorded nine. It allowed two four-point runs which gave the Lady Bulldogs the first set. In the next three sets, the Lady Wildcats outscored Tougaloo 36-18 in kills.

In the second set, Wiley College went on a five-point run with two kills by Mitchell and one by Arthur to take a seven-point lead. Kills by Arthur, Cortez and Mitchell helped wrap up the second set and tie the match.

The Lady Wildcats opened the third set with a five-point run with two kills by Arthur, one by Mitchell and a service ace by Mia Smith. Two kills by Starks and two aces by Ortega increased their lead to nine. Two more aces and attack errors by Tougaloo gave the set to Wiley College.

In the final set, Wiley College led the entire time. It clinched the match with a six-point run. Gray got two aces and Arthur and Smith got kills.

Statistics for Saturday's match at Rust College were unavailable as of press time. The Lady Wildcats will return home on October 14 to host Fisk University.
