Volleyball falls short against Fisk

The Wiley College volleyball team fought back after losing the first two sets but its rally fell short in a four-set loss against Fisk University (25-10, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22) Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Lady Wildcats (3-15, 3-8) drop their second consecutive match and fall to 1-7 at home. They were outhit .187 to .073 and outscored 55-38 in kills. On the serve, Wiley College gave up nine aces and benefited from five errors. It recorded four aces and made four errors. The Lady Wildcats edged Fisk on the block 9-8.

Brayleigh Mitchell led the team with 16 kills. Shayla Arthur followed with eight and blocked four attacks. LeAndria Jackson assisted on 30 kills, adding six digs and two kills. Nadia Cortez recorded a team-high two aces to go along with 11 digs. Kya Gray led the Lady Wildcats with 15 digs. She was one of three to tally double-digit digs. T'aja Hardy put up 10 digs and a service ace.

Wiley College struggled in the first set – only putting down five kills and committing seven attack errors. It fell behind by nine and wasn't able to recover. Fisk put down 15 kills and only made four attack errors. The Lady Wildcats trailed by as many as 10 in the second set. With Cortez serving, they made a run. Mitchell and Arthur recorded kills and Cortez put down two aces to pull Wiley College within two. Fisk pushed its lead to six and didn't look back.

Faced with a must-win, Wiley College jumped out to the lead. Gray had five kills and a service ace. They Lady Wildcats led by as many as four. Fisk surged back and tied the set at 22. Gray's fifth kill and a block by Mia Smith extended the match.

Three kills by Mitchell gave the Lady Wildcats a three-point lead in the fourth set. They would lead by as many as seven. Fisk stormed back and tied the set at 21. A service error put Wiley College back in front. It was unable to finish the set. Four kills by Fisk sealed the match.

The Lady Wildcats host Oakwood University at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Ambassadors were swept by Philander Smith.
