Volleyball visits SUNO, Dillard

The Wiley College volleyball team will embark on its final road trip of the regular season when it travels to New Orleans for three matches against Southern University at New Orleans and Dillard University Friday and Saturday.

Friday's doubleheader against Southern-New Orleans will begin at 4 p.m. First serve of Saturday's match at Dillard will be at 1 p.m. All three matches will be broadcast on HBCU+ with Friday's matches on Channel 113 and Saturday's match on 107.

The Lady Wildcats (4-15, 4-8 GCAC) salvaged a split last week by sweeping Oakwood University after falling in four sets against Fisk University. The win moved Wiley College into sixth place in the conference standings with four matches remaining. Brayleigh Mitchell tallied 28 kills for an average of four per set. Shyla Starks added 17 kills. Nadia Cortez added 24 digs and four service aces.

Southern-New Orleans (0-9, 0-9 GCAC) restarted its program after last competing in 2019. It didn't open the season until October 6 due to personnel issues. Holly Richardson leads the team with 53 kills. Malaysia Hudson follows with 36. Alana Mumphrey leads in assists with 72 and in aces with seven. Richardson leads the Lady Knights with 58 digs and nine blocks.

Dillard (17-9, 11-2 GCAC) has won four of its last five matches, including its last three GCAC matches. Sara Da Silva ranks fourth in the conference with a .226 hitting percentage. Chasry Lum-King is third in the conference with 3.99 digs per set. Gabrielle Washington is second in the conference with 0.88 blocks per set and Nya St. Cyr is fourth with 0.79 blocks per set. Cadence Thomas, Da Silva and Sage Grider each had seven kills in the Sept. 23 match at Wiley College.

The Lady Wildcats played a home-and-home with SUNO in 2014 and won both matches. Wiley College and Dillard have split eight matches. The Lady Wildcats haven't beat the Lady Bleu Devils since joining the GCAC.
