Volleyball sweeps SUNO, falls to Dillard

NEW ORLEANS – The Wiley College volleyball team dominated Southern University at New Orleans in two matches (25-13, 25-15, 25-11; 25-8, 25-14, 25-4) on Friday and fell in three sets (25-9, 25-11, 25-12) at the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference second-place team Dillard University on Saturday.

The victories at SUNO gave the Lady Wildcats their longest winning streak of the season at three. They remain in sixth-place, a half-match behind Rust College.

In the first match Friday, Wiley College outhit Southern-New Orleans .383 to .000 and outscored them 46-12 in kills. It was also stronger on the serve with nine service aces and benefited from eight errors by the Lady Knights – which put down one ace and benefited from 11 errors by the Lady Wildcats.

Brayleigh Mitchell led the Lady Wildcats with 14 kills on 22 attempts. Shayla Arthur followed with 10 kills and Rejinah Hickman returned to the lineup and provided nine. Kyra Woods picked up 20 assists and LeAndria Jackson recorded 18. T'aja Hardy recorded four service aces. Nadia Cortez and Arthur led the team with six digs. Arthur had a solo block and a block assist.

Wiley College (6-16, 6-9 GCAC) overwhelmed SUNO in the second match outscoring them 34-12 in kills. It also put down 23 service aces. Kyra Woods recorded a double-double with 17 assists and a program-record 15 service aces. Mitchell led the team with seven kills. Shyla Starks and Kya Gray followed with five each. Cortez led the team with eight digs. Arthur led in blocks with a solo block and a block assist.

On Saturday, the Lady Wildcats were unable to keep pace with the Lady Bleu Devils. They were outscored 35-18 in kills and did not record a service ace or block. Mitchell led the team with eight kills, followed by Arthur, who had six. Jackson recorded 11 assists. Cortez led the team with 11 digs.

Wiley College will wrap up the regular season on October 28 against Philander Smith University.
