Volleyball finishes regular season against Philander Smith

Match Notes

The Wiley College volleyball team will wrap up the regular season against Philander Smith University at 3 p.m. Saturday in Alumni Gymnasium.

The match will be broadcast on HBCU+ Channel 115 and can be viewed online or the app can be downloaded on a phone, tablet or smart TV. Live statistics will also be available. The volleyball team will honor seniors before the match.

The Lady Wildcats (6-16, 6-9 GCAC) took two of three matches on the road last week with two victories over Southern University at New Orleans. Brayleigh Mitchell put up 29 kills. Kyra Woods tallied 40 assists and 16 service aces with 15 coming in the second match against SUNO – which set a program record. Nadia Cortez tallied 25 digs. The victories helped Wiley College secure the sixth seed for the 2023 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship.

Philander Smith (11-14, 8-7 GCAC) also picked up two victories against Southern-New Orleans, which helped them lock up the fourth seed as it looks to defend its title. Kiah Rucker had 25 kills in the two matches. Essence Wren picked up 38 assists and five service aces. She leads the conference with 7.56 assists per set.

In the first matchup on September 30, the Lady Wildcats fell in five sets at Little Rock. They allowed a five-point lead to slip away in the third set. Wiley College outscored Philander Smith 58-54 in kills. It hasn't defeated the Lady Panthers since joining the GCAC last season. The Lady Wildcats' last victory over Philander Smith came in the 2018 season opener.
