Volleyball succumbs to Jarvis Christian
HAWKINS, Texas - In a spirited display of determination and teamwork, Wiley University volleyball showcased its promising future as several players made their season debuts against Jarvis Christian University on Wednesday. The Lady Wildcats fell in three sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-15) as they seek to find their best rotation.
Kerrigan Biggs, who transferred from the University of Arkansas at Monticello, started and played all three sets. She contributed two kills and a block assist. Sabriiyah Young, who is on a softball scholarship, joined the team last week and played two sets. Lynnetra Taylor, Leah Monsegue and T'aja Hardy, who played last season, saw their first action in 2025.
Shyla Starks and Rachelle Santos led the team with six kills apiece. Jae Jemmott followed with five and shared the team lead in blocks with Santos at three. Madison Herrera was the primary setter and posted 16 assists and two digs. Marai Guinyard, Johna Davis and Asia Griffiths provided service aces. For the third consecutive match, Nadia Cortez led in digs with seven.
The Lady Wildcats were outhit .304 to .015 and outscored 35-20 in kills. They gave up eight service aces and made 11 errors while recording three aces and benefiting from 10 errors by Jarvis Christian. Wiley was outblocked 8-5.
How it happened:
- The Lady Wildcats allowed the first eight points with four receiving and one attack error. Kills by Starks, Jemmott and Biggs pulled Wiley within two. The Lady Bulldogs scored four of the last five points to take the first set.
- Jarvis opened the second set with five kills and jumped out to a five-point lead. Errors by the Lady Wildcats increased the deficit to eight.
- The Lady Wildcats closed the gap to 19-15 with two kills and a block by Jemmott. Two errors, a block and a kill pushed the margin to eight. A service error sealed the second set for Jarvis.
- Wiley grabbed its only lead early in the third set with an ace by Griffiths and an attack error by Jarvis. Five kills and an ace contributed to seven unanswered points scored b the Lady Bulldogs. A kill and an attack error completed the match.
UP NEXT: The Lady Wildcats open Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference play at Southern University at New Orleans on Friday and the defending tournament champion Dillard University on Saturday.
