Volleyball opens HBCUAC play at SUNO, Dillard
The real season begins this weekend for Wiley University volleyball as it travels to New Orleans to open HBCU Athletic Conference play with a Friday night showdown at Southern University at New Orleans, followed by a Saturday morning match at Dillard University.
First serve for Friday's match is set for 6 p.m. and Saturday's match is slated for an 11 a.m. start. Both matches will be streamed on the Urban Edge Network, which can be viewed online or downloaded for free to mobile devices.
The Lady Wildcats (1-2) seek to win their conference opener for the second time in three seasons. In 2023, they defeated Tougaloo College. This will be the first season that they open conference play on the road since 2022. Wiley is 14-4 in conference openers dating back to 2006.
Last season, the Lady Wildcats dropped both matches to SUNO and Dillard. They haven't beat the Lady Bleu Devils since joining the conference in 2022. Their last win was in 2019.
The Lady Wildcats are coming off their second straight loss, falling 3-0 against Jarvis Christian University. Shyla Starks and Rachelle Santos led the attack with six kills each. Madison Herrera posted a career-high 16 assists. Santos and Jae Jemmott each recorded three blocks.
Through three matches, Wiley ranks 12th in the NAIA with 2.70 service aces per set. Nadia Cortez ranks second in the nation with 1.30 service aces per set. She ranks second in the HBCUAC with four digs per set.
With Kerrigan Biggs, Sabriiyah Young, Lynnetra Taylor and T'aja Hardy's debuts on Wednesday, 19 Lady Wildcats have seen the court in 2025. Rejinah Hickman and Lealani Monsegue are the only ones waiting to make their season debut.
