Volleyball falls short against Jarvis Christian

MARSHALL, Texas - Playing in front of a packed Alumni Gymnasium, Wiley University volleyball played a competitive match but ultimately fell in three sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-20) against its Highway 80 rival Jarvis Christian University on Wednesday.
 
The Lady Wildcats drop to 1-1 at home and lose consecutive matches for the second time this season. They were edged 35-34 in kills, but were less efficient on the attack with a .092 hitting percentage. Wiley allowed Jarvis to hit .300. Both teams scored 14 points on the serve. The Lady Wildcats recorded four aces and benefited from 10 errors by the Lady Bulldogs, who tallied three aces and took advantage of 11 errors. They were outdone on the block 6-2.
 
For the fourth consecutive match, Shyla Starks led the Lady Wildcats with 10 kills on 23 attempts. It was her second double-digit match of the season. She also led the team with a solo block and a block assist. Jae Jemmott followed with nine on 23 attempts. Madison Herrera recorded 25 assists, three digs and an ace. Marai Guinyard, Nadia Cortez and Kerrigan Biggs also recorded aces. Cortez led with nine digs.
 
How it Happened:
  • With the first set tied at 11, the Lady Wildcats made three attack errors and fell behind by five. Starks recorded two kills and teamed up with Jemmott for a block to cut the margin to two. Jarvis got two kills and took advantage of an attack error to push the margin to five.
  • The Lady Wildcats trailed by four early. A service error, a kill by Jemmott and an ace from Biggs tied the set at 12. Following a timeout, the Lady Bulldogs regained the lead with a service error, an attack error and a kill. Wiley trailed by as many as six. Kills by Starks, Rachelle Santos and Biggs pulled it within three. Two kills sealed the set for Jarvis.
  • Wiley trailed by three early in the third set. Kills by Biggs, Johna Davis, and Starks and an ace by Herrera put it in front 11-8. An ace by Guinyard increased the lead to four. Three attack errors and two blocks allowed Jarvis to go on a five-point run and take a three-point lead. A pair of errors cut the margin to one. A service error, two attack errors and an ace clinched the match for Jarvis.
UP NEXT: The Lady Wildcats will host Tougaloo College in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference match at 1 p.m. Saturday.
