Volleyball hosts Paul Quinn, visits Huston-Tillotson
Wiley University volleyball wraps its homestand, taking on Paul Quinn College in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) match at 7 p.m. Friday in Alumni Gymnasium. It will visit West Division leader Huston-Tillotson University at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The matches will stream on the Urban Edge Network, which can be viewed online or downloaded to mobile devices via the app. Live statistics will also be available. The link is listed in the volleyball schedule on wileyathletics.com.
The Lady Wildcats, Lady Tigers and Rams meet as conference opponents for the first time since 2021. Wiley and Paul Quinn competed against each other in the Red River Athletic Conference from 2006 to 2007, 2019 and 2021. It competed against Huston-Tillotson from 2006-2019 and 2021. Wiley leads the series 7-3 but has lost the last two matches against the Lady Tigers. It leads the series against Huston-Tillotson 19-7, but has lost seven of the last 10 matches.
It enters Friday's match, coming off a four-set win against Tougaloo College. Three players finished with double-digit kills. Shyla Starks and Jae Jemmott shared the team lead with 14. Rachelle Santos followed with 12. Madison Herrera recorded a career-high 33 assists. She just missed her first career double-double with nine digs. Nadia Cortez led all players with 19 digs and shared the team lead in service aces with Marai Guinyard at six. Guinyard also notched double-digit digs with 12. Jemmott recorded three solo blocks and a block assist. Kerrigan Biggs followed with a solo block and two assists.
Wiley (3-4, 2-1 HBCUAC) matches its win total from last season and is off to its best start in conference play since 2019. It is looking to win consecutive conference matches for the first time since October 15 and 20, 2023.
Paul Quinn (7-10, 2-1 HBCUAC) enters Friday's match looking for its third conference victory. It split last week's matches with a four-set victory over Southern University at New Orleans and was swept by Dillard University.
Huston-Tillotson (6-7, 3-0 HBCUAC) hopes to continue its unbeaten run in its first season in the HBCU Athletic Conference. It hosts Philander Smith University on Friday.
