Playing in front of the home crowd for the first time in two weeks, Wiley University volleyball could not finish off Southern University at New Orleans in a four-set loss (25-19, 22-25, 28-26, 26-24) on Friday and fell short in a three-set defeat (25-19, 25-15, 25-19) on Saturday against Dillard in Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) matches at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Lady Wildcats (3-9, 2-6 HBCUAC) suffer their fifth straight loss and drop to 2-4 at home.
FRIDAY
Wiley outscored SUNO 58-52 in kills but the Knights hit more efficiently at .162 to .133. The Lady Wildcats were edged in serving 12-9 and 9-7 in the block. They held the advantage 81-77 in digs.
Jae Jemmott led the team with 23 kills in 56 attempts. Rachelle Santos and Shyla Starks followed with 10 and nine, respectively. Madison Herrera recorded a career-high 42 assists. Nadia Cortez led the team with 22 digs, marking her second match with 20 or more. She surpassed 500 career digs with her performance. Johna Davis led the team on the block with five solo and one assist.
SATURDAY
The Lady Wildcats were outscored by the defending HBCUAC postseason champion 47-31 in kills and outhit .265 to .137. Dillard was slightly stronger on the serve with three aces to one by Wiley. Both teams had five blocks.
Jemmott led the team with eight kills. Starks followed with seven and Davis and Kerrigan Biggs followed with six and five, respectively. Maria Luiza Chaves led the team with 15 assists in two sets. Herrera recorded nine in the third set. Asia Griffiths led the team with nine digs. Santos recorded a solo block and a block assist. Biggs tallied two block assists.
Wiley will travel to Tougaloo College on October 18. It defeated the Lady Bulldogs in four sets at home on September 20.
