Baseball falls to No. 19 Science and Arts of Oklahoma
Several Wiley College baseball players got the opportunity to play against No. 19 University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in 10-3 and 26-4 losses Sunday at Marshall Mavericks Baseball Field on the campus of Marshall High School.
The Wildcats (1-2) are still searching for their first home victory since 2020. The Drovers improved to 5-1.
Kai Woodard, who made his debut on the mound against Texas College last week, started at designated hitter in Game 1 and homered in his first two at-bats. His first went over the left-center field wall in the bottom of the first. He hit his second over the center field wall in the fourth inning. Woodard drove in a third run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Jose Cortez came in as a sub and made his debut in left field. Jayden Ayala came off the bench and played shortstop. Jerrius Vickers made his first appearance on the mound and threw 1 1/3 innings.
Wiley College fell behind after allowing four runs in the first inning off two hits and an error. Woodard got the Wildcats on the board with his first home run. The Drovers looked like they were going to pile on in the second, loading the bases with no outs. Luis Chapa turned a double play on a ground ball by Antonio Hrynkiw, limiting them to one run.
Terrance Hill took over for Daniel Cox on the mound in the third inning and was on his way to a scoreless inning after a double play by Traylon Ansley erased a leadoff walk. A walk, a hit batter and an error loaded the bases. Science and Arts took advantage of the extra outs as Nick Fleckenstein brought home three runs with a double.
Caidin Franklin and Ayala got the Wildcats other hits. Ayala's hit came in the seventh which set up Devin Molina to score on Woodard's fly ball.
Cox went two innings in his first start. Only one of the five runs he allowed were earned. He gave up five hits, one walk and struck out two.
In Game 2, Gabriel Garcia and Emanuel Gutierrez made their first career starts. Wiley College gave up 11 runs on eight hits and an error in the first inning. Offensively, they didn't have a runner reach base until Gutierrez singled in the fourth inning.
The Wildcats finished the game strong as they put up four runs in the seventh inning. Christian Medina singled to short. Khris Valdez singled to center. A wild pitch moved the runners in scoring position. Jacob Perez brought them home with a single. Bryce Garrett followed with a single. An error and a single by David Pierre drove them in.
A.J. Garcia made his first start on the mound and faced nine batters. Isaac Burciaga completed the first inning. Chance Guidry, Noah Codina, Elijah Davila, Dante Enrriquez and Dylan Washington threw the rest of the game.
