Baseball falls to No. 24 Southwestern Assemblies of God

The Wiley College baseball team rallied late but were unable to overcome an early deficit in a 16-9 loss to No. 24 Southwestern Assemblies of God University Tuesday at Airport Park.

The Wildcats (16-16) fall in their third straight home game and drop to 6-8 at Airport Park. The Lions snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 5-10 on the road.

Kai Woodard went 2-for-3 with a double, run and a RBI. Allan Mendoza went 1-for-3 with two runs, two stolen bases and a RBI. Abiel Trevino went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Johed Ortega got a hit and a run. Julian Rosales and Darion Wallace also got RBIs.

Twenty-six players saw action, including nine pitchers. Jalen Porter started and threw two scoreless innings. He only allowed a walk and a hit. A.J. Garcia pitched 1/3 of an inning. Isaac Burciaga tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings – only giving up two hits. Coren Lewis made his first appearance on the mound and struck out one in an inning. Dylan Washington threw 2/3 of an inning. Noah Codina only allowed a walk in 1 1/3 innings. Daniel Cox, Terrance Hill and Jerrius Vickers threw the final two innings.

Wiley College didn't get a hit until the fourth inning. It fell behind in the third when it allowed five walks. A wild pitch also brought home a run. A double scored two runs. Burciaga and Lewis held SAGU scoreless in the next two innings.

Luis Mares broke up the no-hitter with a line drive single over shortstop Dominic Padilla's glove. Marquis Kuykendall led off with a walk. Taber Dunn advanced on catcher's interference. Jose Cortez courtesy ran and got caught in a rundown between first and second, which allowed Kuykendall to advance to third. He scored on a ground ball by Wallace. Mendoza reached on catcher's interference and stole second. Woodard brought him home with a single to left.

Southwestern Assemblies of God (27-14) answered with three runs in the sixth. Five runs in the eighth, put the Lions in position to invoke the 10-run mercy rule. They subbed out several starters. Woodard led off with a double and Gutierrez walked. Trevino drove in Woodard with a single. Julian Rosales extended the game scoring Gutierrez with a groundball to second. Trevino scored on a wild pitch.

Two hits and an error added three runs for SAGU in the ninth. The Wildcats had one last rally. Caidin Franklin led off with a single. Johed Ortega followed with a single. Mendoza brought home Trey Perkins, who courtesy ran for Franklin. An error scored Mendoza and Ortega.

The Wildcats will resume Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play with a three-game series against Tougaloo College.
