Men's Soccer draws even against Texas A&M-Texarkana

TEXARKANA, Texas - Anthony Ulloa scored in the second half and goalkeepers Daniel Rojas and Kevin Nievas stopped five shots as Wiley University men's soccer played to a 1-1 tie against Texas A&M University-Texarkana Saturday at Judy Kelley Morgan Field.

The Wildcats extend their unbeaten streak to three matches, their longest since 2017, when they won seven straight. It's their first tie since closing the 2023 season. Ulloa scored his second goal of the season in the 51st minute, which tied the match. He led the team with five shots with three on goal. Rojas started at goalkeeper and stopped four of five shots in nearly 39 minutes. Nievas, the two-time Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Defensive Player of the Week, took over and made a save in the second half that kept the match at one goal.

A foul set up a penalty shot for the Eagles, which they converted to take the lead in the 25th minute. Alejandro Barcena, who made his debut, and Rintaro Sakai put shots on goal immediately, but they were both stopped by Texarkana's goalkeeper David Yearwood. Rojas stopped three shots from the 29th minute to the 32nd minute, keeping the margin at one. Barcena had a scoring opportunity in the 43rd minute, but it was stopped by Yearwood.

In the second half, Juan Reyes turned away a scoring chance for the Eagles in the 58th minute. Barcena and Christopher Haeger put shots on goal in the 68th and 74th minutes. Ulloa and Rivas put shots on the goal in the last 15 minutes.

The match was very physical and the officials were quick with their whistles. Forty-one fouls were called and 13 cards were issued, including a red to both teams.
The Wildcats will continue their road stretch on Wednesday at Louisiana State University of Alexandria.
