Men's Track and Field qualifies for nationals in two events

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - The Wiley University men's track and field team finished the Prairie View A&M Relays by qualifying for the 2024 NAIA Men's Outdoor Track and Field National Championship in the 4 x 100-meter relay and the 4 x 400-meter relay Saturday at PVAMU Track and Field Complex.

These are the second and third events the Wildcats have qualified for nationals. Ronald Garrett advanced in the 110-meter hurdles after the Cowboy Relays on March 9. This is the second straight season Wiley has qualified for the NAIA Championship in the 4 x 400-meter relay. It's the first time it advanced in the 4 x 100-meter relay since 2018 when it won the national title.

The team of Micah Ruben, Ronald Garrett, Justice Northern and Tyvonne Allen finished the 4 x 100-meter relay in 41.40, which met the 'B' qualifying standard. The time was third out of eight relay teams. The 4 x 400-meter relay team of Jaylon Donson, Garrett, Allen and Northern ran in 3:14.69, which surpassed the 'A' qualifying standard. The team finished second behind Prairie View A&M University.

Garrett finished third in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.59. He ran a personal best of 54.86 in the 400-meter hurdles - which narrowly missed the 'B' qualifying standard of 54.60. Allen and Northern placed in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. With a time of 21.98 in the 200-meter dash, Allen was 0.58 seconds shy of the 'B' qualifying standard. Donson, Javoun Goldsby, Jaden Cole and Christian Lacy placed in the 800-meter run. Brian Fisher placed in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles. Dantravian Sloan placed in the 110-meter hurdles.

In field events, Xavier Hutchinson placed in three events, including a third-place finish in the javelin with a distance of 44.49 meters. Isaac Jenkins placed in the high jump and long jump. Ruben led the Wildcats in the long jump with a distance of 6.69 meters. Camron Gibson and Branden Kelly placed in the discus. The Wildcats tallied 63 points, which was third out of seven schools.

Wiley will head to Texas State University's Bobcat Invitational from March 28 to March 30.
