Women's Basketball crushes Tougaloo in HBCUAC Opener

In a rematch of last season's Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) quarterfinal, all 12 Wiley University women's basketball players scored and held Tougaloo College to a 23 shooting percentage in an 85-50 victory in the HBCUAC opener Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.
 
The Lady Wildcats (4-2, 1-0 HBCUAC) win their conference opener for the second time in three seasons. They improved to 2-2 at Alumni Gymnasium. The win is the third straight over Tougaloo and seventh consecutive at home.
 
Alexis Foster made her first start of the season and led the Lady Wildcats with 18 points. She shot 8-for-13 from the field and hit one 3-pointer. Foster also contributed seven rebounds and four assists. Kelechi Dike followed with 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Erin Love provided strong defense down low with seven rebounds and five blocks. Nyemah Hodo provided seven points and five rebounds. Mia Thomas added seven points and three assists.
 
Wiley shot 48 percent from the field, hitting 36 of 75 attempts. It only allowed the Lady Bulldogs to hit 17 of 74 shots and one of 13 three-point attempts.
With 5:04 left in the first quarter, Foster hit a 3-pointer to give Wiley an 11-6 lead. Brandy Jones hit a jumper. Dike stole the ball and scored to push the margin to 11. The Lady Wildcats held Tougaloo without a field goal for over six minutes and led 20-7 after one.
 
A second-chance bucket by Dike sparked an eight-point run, which increased the margin to 21. Wiley held Tougaloo to two shots on 11 attempts. Nine of its 14 points were on free throws. Jumpers by Dike and Jones put the Lady Wildcats ahead by 30 at halftime.
 
Wiley outrebounded Tougaloo 55-46 and outscored them 14-9 in second-chance points. It lost the turnover battle 24-23 but outscored the Lady Bulldogs 25-15 in points off turnovers.
The Lady Wildcats return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference game against Centenary College of Louisiana at 5 p.m.
