Women's Basketball faces surging Tougaloo College

Wiley University women's basketball heads into the second half of its conference schedule seeking to maintain its footing at the top of the standings, but a surging Tougaloo College squad stands in the way.

The Lady Wildcats (10-3, 5-1 HBCUAC) travel to Kroger Gymnasium on Saturday for a pivotal Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) matchup against the Lady Bulldogs (5-8, 4-3 HBCUAC) at 1 p.m.

Wiley is looking to keep pace with Paul Quinn College for the lead in the HBCUAC West Division. The Lady Wildcats split their final two games of the first half of conference play, falling 73-64 at Paul Quinn before rebounding with a 66-54 victory over Huston-Tillotson University.

Key Players to Watch

Wiley's offense has found a rhythm behind a balanced scoring attack:

  • Moriah Burley: Averaged 12 points last week and proved dangerous from deep, sinking six 3-pointers across two contests.

  • Alexis Foster: Provided steady all-around play, averaging 10.5 points, four rebounds, and three assists per game.

  • Mia Thomas: Coming off a standout performance against Huston-Tillotson, where she tallied 15 points and eight rebounds.

The Tougaloo Surge

While Wiley sits higher in the standings, Tougaloo enters the contest as one of the hottest teams in the conference. The Lady Bulldogs are currently on a three-game winning streak, highlighted by a 58-55 upset of defending postseason champion Philander Smith University on Thursday.

Tougaloo's recent success has been fueled by the duo of Maia Turner and Brayland Ferguson. Turner is averaging 16.3 points per game during the streak, while Ferguson has been a force in the paint, averaging 10.7 points and a staggering 14 rebounds per game.

Series History and Outlook

This is the second meeting between the two programs this season. Wiley dominated the first matchup on Nov. 22, cruising to an 85-50 victory at Alumni Gymnasium. It leads the overall series 13-6.

However, the road has historically been unkind to the Lady Wildcats in this series. Wiley has not secured a victory in Tougaloo since Feb. 4, 2023. To break that streak, Wiley will need to contain a Lady Bulldogs team that has found its defensive identity during its recent run.
