Women's Basketball outshoots College of Biblical Studies
Playing in its first home game in 2026, Wiley University women's basketball jumped out and didn't look back in a 91-74 victory over College of Biblical Studies on Monday at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Lady Wildcats (13-6, 7-2 HBCUAC) improve to 7-2 at home. The win snaps a two-game losing streak. It's the third time they've surpassed 90 points in a game. The victory marks the third consecutive win against the Lady Ambassadors.
Wiley seized control with a 13-point run in the first quarter. Jessica Nerestant hit three shots and a pair of free throws. Moriah Burley hit a 3-pointer and Cailan Hale made a layup to give the Lady Wildcats a 15-2 lead. After a 3-pointer by Biblical Studies, Hale hit a 3-pointer to spark a 10-1 run. A three by Alexis Foster and a jumper by Mia Thomas increased the lead to 19. Wiley led 27-10 entering the second quarter.
The Lady Wildcats led by as many as 23 in the second quarter. The Lady Ambassadors hit three 3-pointers during a 13-2 run, which cut the margin to 10. Nerestant made a layup and was fouled. She converted the 3-point play to give Wiley a 44-31 halftime lead.
College of Biblical Studies (3-15) struck first in the second half and pulled within nine with 3:46 left in the third. Shots made by Nerestant, Kelechi Dike and Shayda Fletcher opened a 17-point lead. A 3-pointer by Fletcher in the closing seconds increased the lead to 19. The Lady Ambassadors didn't get closer than 14 in the fourth quarter.
Wiley outshot Biblical Studies 43.5 to 42.2 percent. It outrebounded it 49-41. The Lady Wildcats won the turnover battle 24-15, leading to 29 points. They outscored the Lady Ambassadors 33-12 in second-chance points and 50-34 in points in the paint.
Nerestant led all scorers with 23 points. She shot 10-for-15 from the field. Her 10 rebounds secured her fifth double-double of the season. Mijanae Berry finished with 10 points. Burley provided eight points and eight rebounds. Erin Love provided nine points and four rebounds.
The Lady Wildcats will resume HBCUAC play at Philander Smith University at 1 p.m. on February 14.
