Wiley University women's basketball takes on Paul Quinn College with the top seed in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference West Division on the line at 3 p.m. Thursday inside Alumni Gymnasium.
The Lady Wildcats (14-7, 8-3 HBCUAC) will honor its seniors Kiersten Harris, Mijanae Berry, Daviunia Jones, Keimora Banks, Moriah Burley and Jessica Nerestant after the game. With an 81-63 victory over Huston-Tillotson University on Tuesday, Wiley will look to clinch a No. 1 seed in a conference tournament for the first time since 2014, when it earned the top seed in the Red River Athletic Conference.
After ending the first quarter tied at 16, Wiley pulled away in the second quarter. A 3-pointer by Moriah Burley sparked a 12-point run and opened a 14-point lead for the Lady Wildcats. Alexis Foster hit three shots during the run. Wiley only made on field goal in the last 3:36, which allowed the Rams to narrow the margin to six.
A jumper by Foster and a 3-pointer by Burley pushed the margin to 11 early in the third quarter. Foster got a steal and was fouled. She converted to extend the margin to 18.
Huston-Tillotson (7-13, 3-9) pulled within nine with 7:36 remaining. Mia Thomas hit two shots and made two free throws to push the margin to 15. Four Lady Wildcats scored in double figures led by Foster's 16. She added eight rebounds and five assists. Jessica Nerestant recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Thomas provided 13 points and seven rebounds. Burley scored in double-digits with 10 points, adding four rebounds.
On Thursday, the Lady Wildcats will look to avenge a 73-64 loss they suffered on January 8 in Dallas. They only shot 28.4 percent despite hitting nine 3-pointers. Wiley won the turnover battle 26-19, but the majority of the calls went Paul Quinn's way, as 30 of the 50 fouls were called on the Lady Wildcats. They seek their first win against the Tigers since January 27, 2017.
Paul Quinn (14-9, 8-3 HBCUAC) is on a two-game losing streak and lost five of its last six. It is 4-6 on the road this season. Canai McPherson leads the Tigers with 17.5 points per game, which ranks second in the conference. She is followed by Zaire Brown, who averages 14.6 points and leads the team with 11.3 rebounds per game, ranking fifth in the HBCU Athletic Conference.
The game will stream on the Urban Edge Network. Live statistics will also be available.
