Volleyball ends season in GCAC Championship Quarterfinals
BOSSIER CITY, La. – The Wiley University volleyball team gave the third seed Fisk University all it had in the quarterfinals of the 2023 GCAC Volleyball Championship. The 2023 season ended with a three-set loss at Bossier Parish Community College's Coach Billy Montgomery Gymnasium.
The loss ended the Lady Wildcats' streak of seven consecutive seasons of reaching the conference semifinals or further. The match was the final one for Shayla Arthur, LeAndria Jackson and Kya Gray, who will be graduating in May.
Wiley University (6-18) was outhit .361 to .094 and outscored 44-27 in kills. Shyla Starks led the team with nine kills. Brayleigh Mitchell, who was an All-GCAC Honorable Mention, followed with seven. Kyra Woods recorded a double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs. Nadia Cortez tallied a team-high 15 digs. T'aja Hardy, Johna Davis and Cortez put down aces.
The Lady Wildcats started strong in the first set, pulling out to a 9-3 lead. Starks had four kills and Davis tallied a kill and a service ace. Momentum shifted when Wiley University committed four attack errors and a receiving error. Three kills by Fisk gave it a 19-16 lead and the Lady Wildcats were unable to rally. Four kills and two attack errors sealed the set for the Lady Bulldogs.
Fisk controlled the second set as it put down 17 kills and only made three errors. The Lady Wildcats were only able to come up with seven. Needing to win to extend its season, Wiley took an early lead in the third set with kills by Mitchell, Starks and Gray. Two attack errors, a block error and a receiving error allowed the Lady Bulldogs to take the lead with a six-point run. An ace by Hardy and a kill by Starks tied the set at 14.
Two kills and a block gave the lead back to Fisk. Mitchell pulled Wiley within one with a kill. The Lady Bulldogs scored four straight points to seal the match.
Most of the team is projected to return, including Mitchell, Cortez, Starks and Woods. Head coach Nancy Sikobe will hit the recruiting trail to strengthen the team to make a deeper run in 2024.
