Women's Basketball holds off Dillard, remains unbeaten in HBCUAC play
Four Wiley University women's basketball players scored in double figures as the Lady Wildcats overcame a slow start and held off a late rally in an 84-80 victory over Dillard University in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) game Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Lady Wildcats (8-2, 3-0 HBCUAC) extend their winning streak to five games. For the second time in three seasons, they open conference play with three consecutive victories. The victory is their fourth straight at home.
Brandy Jones led the Lady Wildcats with 16 points. She made three 3-pointers and went 7-for-10 from the free throw line. This was her fourth game in double-figures. She contributed defensively with three steals. Moriah Burley recorded her fourth double-digit scoring game with 13 on four made shots, including 3 three-pointers. Kelechi Dike put up 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Daviunia Jones had her most productive game in a Lady Wildcat uniform with 10 points and six rebounds. Guards Keimora Banks and Mia Thomas set up their teammates with six and five assists, respectively.
Wiley trailed 18-8 with 4:34 left in the first quarter. It only made two field goals and turned the ball over twice. After a timeout by head coach DeWitt Mandley, Banks got a steal and a fastbreak layup. Jessica Nerestant scored a layup and-one to cut the margin to five. Wiley trimmed the lead to 25-21 after the first quarter.
Dillard (4-7, 1-3 HBCUAC) pushed the margin to eight in the second quarter. Daviunia Jones hit a layup and after converting two free throws, Brandy Jones stole the ball and hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to one. Daviunia Jones gave the Lady Wildcats a 40-39 lead with an offensive putback for their first of the game. The Lady Bleu Devils retook the lead with 3:27 remaining. A layup by Burley sparked a nine-point run for the Lady Wildcats. Mia Thomas gave Wiley the lead with an offensive putback. A 3-pointer by Burley increased the lead to 49-42 at halftime.
The Lady Wildcats led by as many as 12 in the second half. Dillard took advantage of a four-minute stretch where Wiley missed seven shots and cut the lead to four. Three-pointers by Burley and Fletcher gave Wiley an eight-point lead entering the fourth.
Dillard stayed within striking distance, hitting six shots. Leading by six with 2:43 left, Wiley missed four shots, which allowed the Lady Bleu Devils to pull within two. Kendall Campbell hit a 3-pointer with 48 seconds left, increasing the lead to five.
The Lady Wildcats will wrap the first half of their schedule on December 13 against Philander Smith University. The Lady Panthers improved to 3-0 in conference play with a 75-45 drubbing of Southern University at New Orleans.
