Women's Basketball pulls away in third; extends streak

Wiley University women's basketball had three players score in double figures and took control in the third quarter of an 85-69 victory over Philander Smith University in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) game Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.
 
The Lady Wildcats (9-2, 4-0 HBCUAC) enter the holiday break on a six-game winning streak and are one of three teams still unbeaten in HBCU Athletic Conference play. This is the third straight game they've scored 80 or more points and the fifth this season.
 
Brandy Jones led all scorers with 18 points in 17 minutes off the bench. She hit four 3-pointers and went 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Alexis Foster followed with 15 points and four assists. She shot 5-for-7, including 3-for-4 from 3-point territory. Jessica Nerestant recorded 10 points and six rebounds. Eleven Lady Wildcats got on the board.
 
Wiley trailed 25-22 after the first. It committed seven turnovers, which led to six points for the Lady Panthers. Foster entered the game in the second quarter and gave Wiley the lead with a 3-pointer. She set up Kelechi Dike for a layup to increase the lead. Foster hit her second 3-pointer to increase the lead to 35-28 with 4:42 left in the first half. The Lady Wildcats led 39-32 at halftime.
 
Philander Smith (8-5, 3-1 HBCUAC) pulled within three early in the third quarter. A 3-pointer by Jones pushed the margin to six. Kendall Campell hit a 3-pointer with 2:54 left to give WIley an 11-point edge. A layup by Nyemah Hodo and a jumper by Moriah Burley pushed the margin to 14.
 
The Lady Wildcats led by as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter. They maintained a double-digit lead as the Lady Panthers didn't get closer than 14 points. Wiley outshot Philander Smith 45.8 to 32.9 percent. It outshot them in 3-point territory, hitting 11 of 23 attempts, while the Lady Panthers hit only 5 of 24. Each team grabbed 43 rebounds. Wiley lost the turnover battle 19-16 but outscored Philander Smith 16-15 in points off turnovers.
 
It will enter a break for the Christmas and New Year's holidays. The Lady Wildcats will return to the court on January 8, when they visit Paul Quinn College for the first time since they were last in the Red River Athletic Conference during the 2021-22 season.
